Paid by the Pound: How many cans does it take to make a pound?

Tuesday, August 20th, 2013

Recycling aluminum cans pays you back by the lb, and as you can imagine it takes quite a few cans to make a pound. These kids in the video show you that it takes roughly 33 pop cans to make a pound. Most internet forums agree that it takes roughly 32-35 12oz cans to make up a pound. Obviously larger cans that often store beer and tea drinks in are going to be worth more in weight than smaller cans like the ones energy drinks come in. But if you or your family tends to drink canned beverages, it’s worth the financial and environmental benefits to collect and recycle those cans. Keep your can collection center somewhere easy to get but out of the way, like a garage or laundry room. That way the whole family can through their used cans into your collection area. A large garbage bag hanging out of the way or a large bin sitting in a corner are great ways to keep your can collection stored and growing.

While the kids make crushing the cans look fun,  it’s actually not necessary to spend all that time and muscle crushing your cans. Thanks to the new Cash for Cans machines that are scattered around the valley, your can crushing is done for you at the time of recycling. You can still crush your cans to make more room for collecting, or if you have a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do, but it’s not necessary for recycling.

Once you have a few pounds worth of cans, just take them down the street to your nearest Cash for Cans recycling center. I recommend taking your cans along with errand run, saving on gas as well. And as you can see from the video, kids love to get involved with the collecting and recycling of cans, so make it a family affair.
